1. What Grail Is

Grail is a personal fountain pen and ink ledger for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, developed by Orochi Systems in Tokyo. It keeps track of the pens you own, the inks on your shelf, the pairings that are inked right now, and the history of every fill, flush, and repair. It is free, has no in-app purchases, and needs no account. Everything you enter stays on your device and, if you choose, in your own private iCloud.

2. Contact Support

Email grail@orochisystems.com for Grail support. The fastest way is from inside the App: open Settings, scroll to About, and tap Send Feedback. This opens a mail in your own mail app whose draft already carries your Grail version, system version, and language, and nothing else. We can help with pen and ink records, the catalog, fills and the Currently Inked screen, care events, iCloud sync, export and import, the sample library, themes and papers, and privacy questions.

3. What to Include in a Bug Report

Send Feedback fills in the App version for you. If you write to us directly, please include: - The Grail version, shown under Settings → About. - Your device, for example iPhone 17 Pro, iPad Air, or a MacBook Air. - Your iOS, iPadOS, or macOS version. - Which screen or record is involved. - What you expected to happen and what happened instead, step by step if you can. - Whether iCloud sync is on, and whether the problem appears on one device or on all of them. Screenshots help. Redact anything you would rather not share first.

4. No Account, and What That Means for Support

Grail has no account, no login, and no server. Your library lives on your devices and in your own iCloud, and Orochi Systems cannot see, retrieve, or repair it. If a record looks wrong, we can explain what the App does and how to fix it, but we cannot look at your data or restore it for you. This is also why the App asks for nothing to get started.

5. Quick Checks

If Grail is not behaving as expected, first verify the following. - You are running the latest version of Grail. Your version is shown under Settings → About. - Your device is on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS 15 or later. - For sync, every device is signed in to the same Apple Account, iCloud Drive is on, and Grail is allowed to use iCloud in your device settings. - The iCloud account status row in Settings reports that iCloud is available.

6. iCloud Sync

When you are signed in to iCloud, Grail mirrors your library to your private iCloud database and your other devices pick it up. Sync usually takes a moment, and can take longer on a slow connection or right after a large import. If a change does not appear on another device, confirm both devices use the same Apple Account, open Grail on each so it can refresh, and give it a minute. If you edited the same pen on two devices while offline, Grail reconciles the duplicate fills when it becomes active and merges records that were created under the same identity. Turning iCloud Drive off for Grail keeps the library only on that device.

7. Export and Import

Export, under Settings, writes a JSON archive of your whole library, including photographs, to a location you pick, such as iCloud Drive, the Files app, or another device. Import merges an archive back in. Records already in your library are matched rather than duplicated, and deletions are remembered, so an older archive does not bring back what you removed on purpose. Keep an export before a major change if your library matters to you.

8. Sample Library

On a fresh install Grail offers to load a sample library so you can see the App with data. You can remove it again from Settings. Removing it keeps anything you edited or added yourself: a sample pen you rewrote as your own, a bottle you added under a sample ink, and your own fills that used a sample ink.

9. Library Recovery

If Grail cannot read its library file at launch and the failure looks like corruption or a failed migration, it sets the file aside instead of crashing and starts with an empty library. A set-aside library can be restored from Settings. If this happens, please tell us; the App version, device, and OS version are the details we need.

10. Language

Grail is available in English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, German, Spanish, and French. The interface follows your device language when a translation exists. Japanese names are shown beside romanized Iroshizuku, Sailor, and Platinum inks in every language.

11. Privacy and Safety Note

Do not send passwords, Apple Account credentials, or other secrets. If you share screenshots or an exported archive, remember that they contain your records and any photographs you attached. Grail is not affiliated with any pen or ink maker; catalog entries are reference data and can contain mistakes, so tell us if you find one.
